What we do
The Equine Orthopaedic Research Group is a multidisciplinary team uniting experts from The University of Melbourne's Faculty of Science (Melbourne Veterinary School, School of Mathematics and Statistics), Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering), the Melbourne Data Analytics Platform, the Animal Welfare Science Centre, and CSIRO.
We investigate the causes of musculoskeletal injuries in working and athletic horses, with the ultimate goal of developing practical, evidence-based preventative strategies that improve the health, welfare and safety of horses and those that work alongside them. Our innovative approaches combine cutting-edge technology such as advanced diagnostic imaging and biometric sensors, with mathematical, computational and epidemiological modelling, and detailed investigation of bone microstructure and bone biomechanical properties.
Findings from the research group are translated into global policy and practice, and locally incorporated into our clinical service to improve equine health and performance.
