The Asia-Pacific Centre for Animal Health (APCAH) is an internationally focused research and research training centre that aims to optimise animal health, welfare and production, and product quality, through improved control of infectious agents.
Much of the work of the Centre is focused on One Health, concurrently improving animal and human health and well-being. The Centre conducts multidisciplinary research to develop a fundamental understanding of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of infectious diseases of animals and applies this to enhancing control of disease through improved strategies for vaccination, diagnosis and management.
Our expertise extends across the full range of production animal species (cattle, sheep, poultry and pigs), as well as companion animal species (dogs, cats and horses) and wildlife.
Among the achievements of the Centre are the development of novel diagnostic tests for serological diagnosis of mycoplasmosis in poultry and cattle, and the development of novel vaccines to control disease caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Mycoplasma synoviae, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Mycoplasma bovis, chicken anaemia virus and infectious laryngotracheitis virus. The mycoplasma vaccines developed by the Centre are marketed under the trade names Vaxsafe MG, Vaxsafe MS, Vaxsafe MHP and Protivity. Our vaccine against the infectious laryngotracheitis virus is currently being evaluated in large-scale field trials.
We are part of the National Centre of Excellence in Antimicrobial Stewardship (NCAS), with the aim of optimising the use of antimicrobial therapy in production and companion animals. We also provide mentoring, training and technical support to optimise antimicrobial use in animal health in low- and middle-income countries across the Asia-Pacific region.
Our veterinary epidemiology team offer a large panel of resources through their website to support epidemiological training and decision-making in disease surveillance and control programmes.
In addition to our extensive discovery-based research, we also conduct contract research for the development and registration of novel animal health products to international regulatory standards and provide microbiological diagnostic services to veterinarians and animal owners.
