Academic Integrity
The Faculty of Science is committed to your success; that success includes developing 'good scholarship' practices that will help you avoid issues with academic integrity.
As a student, it is your responsibility to make sure you understand and uphold the University’s expectations. The University takes allegations of Academic Misconduct seriously and uses a number of tools for its detection. Ignorance, good intentions, or ‘different rules’ at places at which you have previously studied will not be accepted as excuses for engaging in academic misconduct.
A reminder that every time you submit or begin an online assessment, you acknowledge and declare that you are familiar with and will adhere to the Student Academic Integrity Policy.
The academic integrity declaration on exam and assessment tools
By commencing and/or submitting this assessment I agree that I have read and understood the University’s policy on academic integrity.
I also agree that:
- Unless paragraph 2 applies, the work I submit will be original and solely my own work. A breach of this principle constitutes cheating.
- I will not seek or receive any assistance from any other person. A breach of this principle is collusion. The exception is where the work is for a designated collaborative task, in which case the individual contributions will be indicated.
- I will not use any sources without proper acknowledgement or referencing. Failure to do so is considered plagiarism.
- Where the work I submit is a computer program or code, I will ensure that:
- Any code I have copied is clearly noted by identifying the source of that code at the start of the program or in a header file or, that comments inline identify the start and end of the copied code
- Any modifications to code sourced from elsewhere will be commented upon to show the nature of the modification.
If you are confused or uncertain of anything around academic integrity, please ask! There are a range of other resources available to support you and you can also raise questions with your subject coordinator:
- Academic Integrity Module (AIM): This online module takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. The module includes a self-assessment quiz on your responsibilities for ethical academic conduct.
- Academic Skills: This website offers a range of resources, workshops and programs to help you refine your academic skills.
- Academic Integrity: On this website you will find explanations and examples to help you to understand the different types of misconduct.
Submission via Turnitin
Student assignments should be submitted through Turnitin. Turnitin links for each assignment are located within each subject's LMS page.
Extensions
- For any absences, or assignment extensions of more than 10 business days, please apply for Special Consideration.
- For assignment extensions of less than 10 business days, please use the faculty online form.

Special Consideration
For details and instructions on how to apply for special consideration, see the University's Special Consideration page.
Assessment items that may be covered under Special Consideration include:
- Assignments (extensions of more than two weeks)
- In-class tests
- Examinations
- Attendance, field trips and hurdle requirements
The eligibility of your application will be assessed by staff in Stop 1 (Student Equity and Disability Services). If your application is assessed as eligible it will then be forwarded to your subject coordinator to determine an outcome.
NOTE: A special examination will only be awarded once with respect to a given subject in a given study period.

Late Submission of essays/assignments
Unless otherwise stated on the LMS or with the assessment criteria, any assignment handed in late will incur a penalty of 10% deduction (of the total marks available) for every day or part of a day that it remains not submitted.
Assignments that are submitted late and are marked to a fail as a result of late submission may not be resubmitted. Assignments should be submitted via the LMS. Hardcopy, fax and email copies will not be accepted unless agreed to by the subject coordinator in advance.
Calculators in Exams
You are required to purchase your own calculator.
Since 2017, the approved calculator for all subjects is the Casio FX82 (any suffix). No equivalent models of calculators will be permitted.
Exceeding word limits in assignments
Unless otherwise stated in the subject outline, assignments that exceed the word limit by more than 10 per cent, inclusive of footnotes, will have 10 per cent of the marks that would otherwise have been awarded deducted.
