Fitness to Practice

At the Melbourne Veterinary School, the health and safety of students during approved placements is a shared responsibility collectively held by the University, the placement providers, and the students. Find out more about your responsibilities.

Your safety and that of others is the highest priority. You must follow all advice and take the necessary steps to protect yourself and others from harm. During placements, students must meet the standards of health, behaviour and performance appropriate for the veterinary profession.

What is Fitness to Practice?

Fitness to practice refers to the combination of qualities and competencies, beyond academic performance, required for professional practice. It ensures a safe environment for the public, students, and professional placement providers and involves managing risks and issues related to professional practice activities like placements, experiential learning, or clinical work.

Student Fitness to Practice Policy

The University of Melbourne holds its students to the highest standards in all areas of their academic work. Our students are expected to adhere to the University’s Student Fitness to Practice Policy, the Melbourne Veterinary School’s Fitness to Practice Rules, and also meet the expectations set by our placement providers.

Support and intervention

If there are concerns about your fitness to practice, we will take appropriate steps to support your learning while taking action when needed. The Faculty is dedicated to balancing remediation and support with the need to prevent harm.
