Consultancy packages
We offer whole-farm consultancy services for livestock producers to increase profitability. The Mackinnon Project can tailor consultancy packages to support you to achieve your farm goals. We also offer a number of structured consultancy packages for common farm goals, including whole farm planning, benchmarking, strategic worm control, trace element assessment (sheep or cattle), weaner management and improving reproductive performance.
Pasture grazing and management
Stocking rate is a major determinant of profitability and can be optimised by growing more pasture at times of the year when feed is limiting, or growing the same amount of grass and improving its utilisation by grazing more efficiently. We can advise on soil testing and fertiliser programs, grazing systems, pasture renovation, selecting an optimum time of lambing/calving, and optimising stocking rate while managing risk.
Disease investigation
The Mackinnon Project veterinarians have considerable experience dealing with animal health issues in sheep and cattle. We offer a full diagnostics service for animal health, and can advise on disease control and prevention.
Genetics
Animal genotype plays a large role in farm profitability, helping the efficient conversion of grass into product. The Mackinnon project has considerable skill and experience in developing and applying practical animal breeding programs with focus on profitability for both sheep flocks and beef herds.
Short courses and post-graduate training
The Mackinnon Project offers education programs for farmers, agribusiness and veterinarians. These can vary from individual presentations, short training courses, to group meetings and post-graduate degrees in veterinary science or agriculture. We have a number of established topics and programs and can also develop and deliver bespoke content on request.
Parasitology laboratory
We offer diagnostic parasitology services including worm egg counts, fluke tests and larval culture. Samples can be submitted directly to our laboratory at Werribee by post. Contact us to find out more.
