Animal Welfare Science Centre
We contribute to improved animal welfare as a world leading provider of expert information, advice and education underpinned by rigorous research.

Formed in 1997, we have developed our scientific research and teaching capacity in animal welfare science and have made many important national and international contributions to animal welfare research, teaching and training.
The Animal Welfare Science Centre (AWSC) collaborates widely with research partners both locally and overseas. We have an especially close relationship with The Ohio State University - Departments of Animal Sciences and Veterinary Preventive Medicine.
The Centre’s research and teaching capacity is considerable, with scientific expertise and experience in the key disciplines of animal behaviour, psychology, stress physiology and veterinary medicine.
The Centre provides excellent opportunities for post-graduate studies to local and international students. Post-graduates are essential to the continued research effort at the Centre and assist in strengthening linkages between the AWSC and other scientific organisations. It is important that students entering the animal industries are well prepared to provide sound, science-based advice on animal welfare practices to industry, interest groups and the public.

Education and training
Tertiary, post-graduate and industry education and training.
Current major projects
Eliminating pig tail removal to improve welfare and industry sustainability
Tail biting is confronting, an undesirable consequence of pork production, and is an adverse welfare and economic issue for the pork industry.Pigs have part of their tail removed (docked) soon after birth to prevent tail biting later in life. Continuation of tail docking is a substantial reputational risk that will threaten the sustainability of the $5.3 billion Australian pork industry.Elimination of tail docking will give significant welfare benefits. This will enhance societal confidence in the pig industry leading to improved market opportunities and production returns for pork producers.Support from the CRC-P will give pork producers the confidence to raise pigs with intact tails while maintaining high standards of pig welfare. Chief Investigator: Assoc. Prof. Lauren Hemsworth
Project participants:- SunPork Pty Ltd, PIC Australasia Pty Ltd, Australasian Pork Research Institute Ltd, Australian Pork Limited, RSPCA Australia, Rivalea (Australia) Pty Ltd, University of Melbourne, The University of New England, The University of Queensland
ProHand® pork abattoir and pig transport
Research in both experimental and commercial settings demonstrate that stockperson characteristics, such as attitudes and handling behaviour, affect fear responses in farm animals, which through acute and chronic stress, can seriously limit farm animal welfare. The ProHand® training programs, which were originally developed by Australian Pork Limited and the AWSC, use cognitive-behavioural training, in which the key attitudes and behaviour of stockpeople are targeted for improvement. We are working with Australian Pork Limited to re-new ProHand® Pork abattoir and develop a ProHand® Pig transport program. Chief Investigator: Assoc. Prof. Lauren Hemsworth
A brief description of ProHand is available here
ProHand® dairy cows
Studies in the dairy industry has shown that cognitive-behavioural training can successfully improve the attitudes and behaviour of stockpeople towards their animals, with consequent beneficial effects on animal fear, stress, productivity and meat quality. In conjunction with Saputo Dairy Australia, we are developing a ProHand® Dairy cow program. Chief Investigator: Assoc. Prof. Lauren Hemsworth
Happy dog science
What does it actually mean for a dog to thrive, and how can we measure it reliably? This research stream, led by the philanthropically supported Chaser Innovation Research Fellowship, develops and validates scientifically rigorous methods for assessing positive welfare states in dogs. Moving beyond the historical focus on minimising suffering, our work establishes objective, quantifiable indicators of positive experiences and agency. Current projects include an international collaboration with Dr Nathan Hall at Texas Tech University - Sniffing out Joy: Pioneering New Ways to Measure Canine Wellbeing - alongside work developing novel behavioural and physiological metrics. We also extend this discovery science into the community through citizen and participatory science, to explore what people believe makes their dogs happy and how those perceptions align (or don't!) with the evidence. Although our focus is on helping dogs live their best lives with us, the findings are expected to have broader applications in animal welfare science.
Digital transparency and working dog welfare
This research stream is building the evidence base needed to develop large-scale digital platforms for monitoring and communicating animal welfare. Funded through the John McKenzie Fellowship, Building Foundations for Digital Animal Welfare Transparency uses working dogs (including guide dogs, detection dogs, and therapy dogs) as a proof-of-concept population, in partnership with established industry collaborators. A central focus is understanding what stakeholders and the public need from welfare transparency initiatives: what information matters, how it is interpreted, and what conditions make digital welfare monitoring credible and trustworthy. This work is designed to lay the groundwork for future national-scale welfare surveillance infrastructure.
Welfare science in practice and policy
Translating welfare science into real-world change requires understanding both animals and the people who work with them. This stream contributes to policy and practice at national and international levels, including through research and case studies for the federal government's Australian Animal Welfare Strategy. Collaborations with bodies including Eurogroup for Animals, Assistance Dogs International, the International Guide Dog Federation, and the Australian Veterinary Association demonstrate our wider impact in policy and organisational contexts. This stream also examines the practical welfare challenges facing working dogs, including the effects of transport, inactivity, sleep disruption, and shift-work on health and performance, connecting research findings directly to industry practice and policy. Current funded work (e.g., Understanding Inactivity, Sleep and Shift-Work to Improve Dog Welfare) is conducted with government and industry partners.

Animal Welfare in the 21st Century: Are we meeting their needs?
Our expert panel unpicked the value of science, research and collaboration, and discuss where welfare standards should land.
-
Animal welfare assurance programs: What does success look like?
Cassandra Tucker, UC Davis discusses animal welfare assessment and audits (using dairy as an exemplar – but very relevant for all sectors): what does success look like?
